Kitchen Interior Design in Bangladesh: A Practical Guide for Dhaka Apartments
Practical kitchen interior design in Bangladesh guide for Dhaka apartments, covering layout, ventilation, storage, lighting and moisture-aware materials.
Kitchen interior design in Bangladesh works best when the practical decisions come before the cabinet colour. In a Dhaka apartment, the kitchen has to manage cooking heat, moisture, storage, appliances, washing, ventilation and daily movement inside a limited footprint. A visually attractive kitchen can still become frustrating if the refrigerator blocks circulation, the sink cabinet is poorly protected from water, or the worktop sits in shadow.
For homeowners planning a new kitchen or renovation, the useful order is simple: understand how the household cooks, choose the layout, coordinate plumbing and extraction, confirm appliances, select suitable materials, then develop the visual language. Bangladesh National Building Code 2020 also sets minimum requirements for residential kitchens. These are safety and habitability baselines, not targets for good design.
Kitchen interior design in Bangladesh should start with how you cook
Before drawing cabinets, write down what actually happens in the kitchen.
A household that prepares several cooked meals each day needs a different arrangement from one that mainly reheats food. A person who cooks alone has different circulation needs from a family where two people regularly prepare meals together.
Start with six questions:
How many people normally use the kitchen at the same time?
What appliances are used every day?
How much preparation space is genuinely needed?
Which groceries, cookware and small appliances need storage?
Where are the existing water, drainage and extraction routes?
Does the kitchen need to connect visually or physically with dining?
Think in activity zones rather than forcing every kitchen into one formula.
A useful sequence is:
food storage
washing
preparation
cooking
serving
cleaning and waste
The refrigerator should not require someone to walk through the main cooking position every time they need water. The waste bin should not be across the room from the sink. Frequently used utensils should be close to where they are used.
A simple worked example
Consider a narrow Dhaka apartment kitchen with a window at one end and existing plumbing beside one wall.
Adding an island because it looks attractive in reference photographs may reduce movement space. A parallel or L shaped layout may work better. The sink can remain close to the existing drainage point, while the cooking position can be planned around a practical extraction route. The refrigerator can sit closer to the entrance so someone can access it without crossing the main cooking zone.
The point is not that one layout is always correct. The existing room should decide the layout before the furniture style does.
Choose the kitchen layout before designing the cabinets
For small kitchen design in Bangladesh, every layout has benefits and limitations.
Layout | Often works well when | Main issue to check |
|---|
Single wall | The kitchen is very narrow or part of a compact open plan | Limited work surface and storage |
L shaped | Two connected walls are available | Corner storage and appliance positions |
Parallel or galley | The room is long and relatively narrow | Door openings and circulation between both sides |
U shaped | Three usable walls are available | Corners and possible feeling of enclosure |
Island layout | The room has generous clear circulation around a central unit | Island size, appliance doors and walking space |
Do not select an island until the plan shows the refrigerator door, oven door, cabinet drawers and people moving through the space at the same time.
The same applies to deep pantry units and tall appliance towers. Storage that looks efficient on an elevation can make a compact kitchen uncomfortable if it narrows the working area.
A designer should therefore study the floor plan and elevations together.
What BNBC 2020 says about residential kitchens
Bangladesh National Building Code 2020 was published in the Bangladesh Gazette in February 2021. The official code establishes minimum standards for building design, construction, health, safety, light and ventilation.
For kitchens, Part III, Chapter 1 contains several requirements homeowners and designers should know.
BNBC 2020 requirement | Minimum stated in the code |
|---|
Kitchen without dining | 4 m² floor area, minimum width 1.5 m |
Kitchen intended to include dining or occasional sleeping | 7.5 m² floor area, minimum width 2.2 m |
Kitchen window | Minimum area 1 m², opening to the exterior or an adequate interior open space |
Kitchen floor | Slip resistant and water tight |
General minimum clear kitchen height | 2.75 m |
Kitchen with mechanical exhaust | Code permits a minimum clear height of 2.15 m, subject to the stated provision |
The code also requires a kitchen sink or another means of washing utensils, with wastewater connected to the appropriate waste system. It recommends considering accessible kitchen design, including routes, turning clearance, counter positions and fixture access.
These numbers should not be treated as ideal design dimensions. They are minimum code provisions. A kitchen that technically reaches a minimum size can still have poor circulation or inadequate storage.
Treat ventilation as part of the layout
The BNBC window requirement should be considered before cabinetry covers valuable wall openings.
Mechanical extraction should also be planned early. The hood position, cooking appliance and exhaust route are connected decisions.
Manufacturer installation guidance commonly requires the extractor to be positioned correctly in relation to the hob, with duct arrangements planned according to the specific appliance. Bosch guidance, for example, notes that the hood should correspond to the hob width and be positioned to capture cooking vapour effectively. Broan installation guidance also recommends keeping duct routes as direct as practical for ducted installations.
ASHRAE's current residential ventilation standard also treats kitchen exhaust as part of indoor air quality design. It is an international technical reference, not a substitute for BNBC or local requirements in Bangladesh.
Do not purchase a hood first and ask where its duct will go later.
Choose kitchen cabinet materials for the actual exposure
Questions about kitchen cabinet materials in Bangladesh often produce overly simple answers such as "use MDF" or "use HPL."
The complete assembly matters more than the product name alone.
A cabinet includes a substrate, surface finish, edges, joints, hardware, backing, sink cutouts and installation details. Water entering through an unfinished edge can affect an otherwise suitable panel.
Material or finish | Useful quality | What to check |
|---|
Standard MDF | Smooth surface for many interior finishes | Standard MDF products may be intended for dry interior conditions |
Moisture resistant MDF | Produced specifically for more humid conditions | Confirm the exact grade and manufacturer data, rather than assuming all MDF is moisture resistant |
HPL faced panel | Hard wearing, cleanable decorative surface | Substrate, edges and joints still need proper detailing |
Compact laminate | High resistance to water and humidity in suitable products | Confirm product thickness, fixing method and intended application |
Kronospan distinguishes its standard MDF, intended for dry interior conditions, from moisture resistant MDF products designed for humid conditions. Formica and EGGER similarly publish product specific information for laminate surfaces, including moisture and wear characteristics.
This is why the phrase "waterproof board" should not be enough information for approving a cabinet specification.
Ask for:
Pay particular attention to the sink cabinet, dishwasher area if present, worktop joints and any cabinet sitting close to a regular source of water.
Material choice also affects maintenance. A finish that shows every fingerprint or requires delicate cleaning may be a poor choice for a heavily used family kitchen even if it looks good in a showroom.
Coordinate storage, lighting and appliances on one drawing
Cabinet design should not happen separately from appliance and lighting design.
Before fabrication begins, confirm the actual or intended models of major appliances. Their sizes, ventilation needs, door swings, service requirements and installation clearances can vary by manufacturer.
At minimum, coordinate:
Allow maintenance access. A beautiful fixed panel is not helpful if a technician cannot reach a valve, electrical point or appliance connection.
Light the worktop, not just the room
A bright ceiling does not automatically produce a well lit preparation surface. Someone standing between a ceiling fixture and the worktop can create shadows exactly where food is being prepared.
Dedicated task lighting under upper cabinets can help place light directly on the work surface. Philips kitchen guidance recommends even task lighting at the worktop, and the Illuminating Engineering Society maintains recognised recommendations for task illuminance in residential environments.
The exact fixture should then be checked using its technical data rather than assuming a particular CRI, IP rating or performance from its appearance.
A useful kitchen lighting plan normally considers three jobs separately:
The switches should also match how the kitchen is used. There is little benefit in carefully layered lighting if every circuit operates together.
Design storage from the contents outward
Before dividing the cabinets, list what needs to fit inside them.
Useful categories include:
Drawers can make lower storage easier to inspect than deep shelves in many situations. Tall storage can be useful for groceries, but should not interrupt the main preparation surface without good reason.
Open shelving should be used deliberately. In an active kitchen it creates more exposed surfaces that need regular cleaning.
A pre-construction checklist for a Dhaka apartment kitchen
Before approving the final kitchen design, check the following:
The room has been measured on site, not only from an old plan.
Existing water and drainage positions have been checked.
The ventilation window remains usable.
The extraction route has been planned.
Major appliances have confirmed dimensions or realistic allowances.
Refrigerator, oven, cabinet and drawer openings have been tested on plan.
Preparation space remains available after appliances are placed.
Frequently used storage is close to the relevant activity.
The sink cabinet and nearby joints have appropriate moisture detailing.
Cabinet substrate and finish specifications are written down.
Worktop lighting is included, not only ceiling lighting.
Electrical and plumbing points are coordinated with the cabinetry.
Valves, filters and appliance connections remain accessible for maintenance.
Samples of important finishes have been reviewed in real light.
The final design has been checked against the existing building condition and applicable regulations.
If the proposal changes structural elements, exterior openings, common building shafts or major services, those changes require separate technical review. An interior drawing should not be treated as permission to alter the building structure or shared systems. BNBC contains specific provisions governing alterations and permits.
What this guide cannot promise
There is no single kitchen layout, material specification, budget or construction approach that is correct for every Dhaka apartment. Existing plumbing, structural conditions, building services, ventilation routes, appliance choices, workmanship, product availability, approvals and the client's budget can all change the appropriate solution. Code provisions can also require professional interpretation for a particular building. Final decisions should therefore be based on a measured site, current regulations and actual product information.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best kitchen layout for a small Dhaka apartment?
There is no universal best layout. A single wall kitchen can suit a very narrow space. An L shaped layout can provide more continuous worktop. A parallel kitchen can use two walls efficiently when circulation allows it.
Start with the room shape, window, doors, plumbing, extraction and appliance openings. Select the layout that preserves a comfortable working area after those constraints are included.
Which material is best for kitchen cabinets in Bangladesh?
No cabinet material is automatically best for every position.
Standard MDF, moisture resistant MDF, laminated panels and compact laminate have different intended uses and properties. More important questions are whether the exact product is suited to the location, how its edges are protected, how the sink area is detailed and whether the installer follows the product requirements.
Ask for the actual material specification rather than accepting a generic material name.
Does a Dhaka apartment kitchen need a chimney or exhaust fan?
Ventilation should be treated as essential kitchen planning. BNBC 2020 requires a qualifying kitchen window, while mechanical extraction may also form part of the ventilation strategy.
Whether a particular kitchen needs a specific extractor type depends on the cooking appliance, room, existing building ventilation and possible exhaust route. Choose the appliance after confirming how it can be installed and vented.
Can I move the sink or cooking position during renovation?
Sometimes, but moving them is not simply a furniture decision.
Moving a sink affects water supply, drainage route and cabinet detailing. Moving the cooking position can affect extraction, electrical or fuel connections, worktop planning and safety clearances. These services should be checked before the new layout is approved.
Keeping a fixture close to a workable existing service route can sometimes produce a simpler design, but the correct decision depends on the apartment.
How much does kitchen interior design cost in Bangladesh?
A responsible figure cannot be given without a defined scope.
The result depends on the size and quantity of cabinetry, substrates, finishes, hardware, worktop, appliances, lighting, plumbing or electrical changes, site condition and level of custom work. Comparing quotations is more useful when each quotation is based on the same drawings and material specifications.
A low total with unclear materials cannot be compared properly with a detailed proposal that specifies each component.
A well planned kitchen should make daily work easier before it tries to make a visual statement. For a Dhaka apartment, that means resolving layout, ventilation, services, materials, storage, appliances and lighting as one connected design problem.
